Homeschooling Advantages
The Christian Homeschooling Advantage
For parents who want to make sure their children are taught good morals and principals and still receive a quality education, Christian homeschooling is an alternative to public schools. There are many benefits, advantages, and disadvantages to consider before making a decision. Parents don't need to feel like they are alone; they can also form groups with other parents and work together. In any case, parents need to be actively involved in their child's education.
Some of the benefits the child receives from a homeschool program are: learning in a safe environment from someone they trust, protection from peer pressure, and flexibility in the schedule. The parents also reap these benefits along with the comfort of knowing what the child is learning and who is doing the teaching.
In public schools the teachers are limited to a schedule and curriculum. Advantages to homeschooling are being able to focus on the child's weaknesses, strengths, and interests. Children learn things at different rates and by different techniques. At home the children have the parent's undivided attention and special care can be given where needed. The parent can spend as much or as little time on a given subject, depending on the capabilities of the child. A child's interests should not be overlooked. For instance, if the child has a natural affinity towards science, math, or history the parent can hone the skills in that particular subject. Too many times in a regular school setting the students are not allowed to investigate special interests.
There are disadvantages to schooling at home. The child doesn't receive the social experiences of being with a group of children their own age. They also miss out on extra-curricular activities such as athletics, art, and band. These can be overcome with the help of friends, family, and church activities, but the parent must be pro-active in these respects. The only disadvantage that cannot be overcome is a parent who is not interested or involved in the education of the child. This is the most damaging situation of all for the child and should be avoided.
Christian homeschooling is a fantastic way to ensure the education your child receives is pure. If this is something you are considering, make sure you are committed to the task so you don't sell your child short. After all, the goal is to teach your child so he or she will be able to leave home with as good or a better education than a typical high-school graduate.
