The Return of Classical Homeschooling

Classical HomeschoolingOur nation's public school system is failing. The truth of this statement lies in the fact that US students have fallen behind in science and math internationally, hence the return of Classical Homeschooling. Parents from all walks of life are pulling their children out of public schools across this country choosing rather to teach them at home.

Classical Home school began in the Middle Ages as an approach to teach people how to learn for themselves. The brain develops through three stages, grammar, logic, and rhetoric. The five tools of learning are reason, record, research, relate and rhetoric. The child begins in the grammar stage where he is taught through listening, reading, writing and observation. Also during this time basic science is taught without abstracts.

The second stage is the logic/science of reasoning and usually begins during middle school years. At this time the child should be a critical thinker, he is given the tools needed to investigate the "whys" of the grammar stage. He will come to logical, valid, accurate, and truthful conclusions. The child will be able to dissect and examine information as an independent thinker.

The final stage or rhetoric stage begins during high school. At this time the child is able to merge the mechanics of study and thinking abilities into one. He will as an adult be able to take the information learned and apply it to life as well as translate it to others effectively.

Children taught in public schools are not taught to think; they regurgitate what has been given to them with no real knowledge of the subject matter. Public schools are systematically producing people who are not truly educated.

There are many home school programs available so do the research to find one that is suitable for your child/children's needs. The cost of curriculum and supplies can be costly; however, with a bit of planning and determination you can succeed. Also there are Home school parent groups available to encourage and give ideas to help you provide your child with a rich Classical Home scooling.html">Classical Homeschooling equips the child with the necessary tools to learn and think independently and logically.

Does anyone have any used Homeschool Curriculum designed for the Classical Homeschool approach?
I have a future first grader and I am looking for curriculum materials for him geared toward the classical homeschooling approach. I've read through the Well Trained Mind and I know what Susan Wise Bauer recommends and where I can buy materials commercially, but I was wondering if anyone had any they wouldn't mind parting with or selling. Please let me know. Also, if you have any good reading book ideas for the Ancients 5000 BC to AD 400, please let me know so I can add them to my list.

any classical homeschoolers here?
or anyone using some CH ideas as part of their curriculum? anyone learning Latin or Greek with their kids? I'm considering using some of the structure of classical homeschooling in combination with Waldorf and unschooling. thanks, busymom, for the link. they so seem to be polar opposites, but both appeal to me, and, as you said, even compliment each other nicely. I've heard wonderful things about unschooling but would need to gain confidence in it slowly...it's a huge leap of faith to think a kid will learn all the basics with no structure. On the other hand, as impressive as CH is, it's also quite daunting, and hard to imagine it working without the imposition of much more structure than I'm interested in (or, I suspect, capable of) imposing. edit: Halo, Classical Education is a specific approach that includes logic, classical languages and literature.

Help with cheap books or ideas for Classical Homeschooling?
Ok, so I am going to try a Classical approach next year. I have decided to begin with the second year (Mideval to Early Rennaisance) because we have studied plants and animals for the last couple years in the science curriculum we have used and my son and I are both ready to move on. I have bought TONS for this first year. I have the Story of the World and the Activity book, I have First Lang. Lessons for Grammar, I have books on history, science, and literature. I have a little for math, but really want to stay away from a curriculum this year and just focus on reviewing and strengthening so I may get some topic driven books for that, but I still need writing, spelling, and some of the books for language arts that are recommended. Any ideas on what I can use, other than what is in Well Trained Mind or where I can find things cheaper or any advice would be great! I feel like I am $5 and $10 myself into the poor house, and I mean what if it just doesn't work for us? HELP!!!!!!!
